In this Diocese, we have 3 Archdeacons. They are appointed by the Bishop to carry out a number of legal and administrative functions in an Archdeaconary. At a parish level, these may include things like making sure that churches look after their buildings properly, that clergy are carrying out their duties properly and that they are given opportunities for development. They often play an important at licensing services for clergy starting new posts, and also admit churchwardens to their office each year.
Archdeacons also exercise ministry at a Diocesan level, sitting on a number of different committees like the Diocesan Advisory Committee which looks at the use of church buildings, Diocesan Synod, and the Diocesan Mission and Pastoral Committee. Archdeacons can also give permission for certain alterations to church buildings.
